Why did I create this template?

Getting valuable insights from your interviews can be frustrating. You spend time preparing your questions, sourcing your respondents, and scheduling interviews only to walk away having learned nothing new. Or worse, having everyone just politely say how awesome your idea/feature/product is.

I've been there. I've run countless interviews during which I learned very little that would help me design a better product. 

But, it doesn't have to be this way. Two books helped me understand that I was doing interviews all wrong. The Mom Test by Rob Fitzpatrick and Continous Discovery by Teresa Torres. 

I've taken everything I've learned in these books and in the many interviews I ran since and distilled it into this User Interview Template. You'll get 9 lessons that take the most important insights about interviews from both books and a toolkit to manage interviews, capture opportunities, and prioritize them so you can build products based on a deep understanding of your customers' pains and needs.

How to use the template?

I recommend you start by going through the lessons I’ve included in this toolkit. They will help you prepare for interviews that generate product insights.

Once you are ready, you can dive into the Interview Manager. The manager has 3 databases. Your Interviews, where you schedule, track and write notes for each subject you talk to. Writing notes in Interviews automatically generates Opportunities and Insights. Once you’ve done a few interviews, you can use Insights and Opportunities to start categorizing and prioritizing the ones you want to dive deeper on.

Use the Structure Your Interview guide to create your interview template. You’ll be able to automatically generate your questions from this template for each interview.
